This page includes descriptions of problems that have tripped up a number of people. This is NOT the complete bug list - if the bug you reported hasn't shown up here, don't think we haven't read it!
Every item below includes the date it was written as well as the program version on which it was reported. (You can see which version you are using either in the start-up screen or the about box.)

Common questions


Configuration/launch problems

- Won't launch - says it can't find DragLib or Color Picker.
Solution: PageMill requires 2 extensions on top of MacOS System 7.1: Macintosh Drag AndDrop, and Color Picker. Both of these are built in to MacOS System 7.5, which is why we recommend using that version. However, if your machine has 7.1, you can add those 2 extensions and PageMill will run fine. How do you get those extensions? Unfortunately, we're not (yet) licensed to redistribute Apple's system software extensions, so you'll have to get them from a friend, or directly from Apple. - Won't launch - says "there's another copy with this registration already running on this network", even though you know that's not true.
Solution: PageMill's license protection includes verification that multiple copies of the same registration number aren't running simultaneously. If PageMill crashed on you, it's possible that on restart, it thinks that the previous session is still running, so it thinks there are multiple copies (sort of like seeing yourself in a mirror and thinking you're actually twins). You can clear this condition by restarting AppleTalk, by opening your Chooser, then clicking twice: first click to make AppleTalk INACTIVE, and then click to make it active again. Or, you can reboot your machine. (8/30/95, v1.0b1)

Opening files

- Can't open documents with names that don't end in ".htm"or ".html" (unless PageMill created it). It tells me "Out of Memory!"
Solution: PageMill was putting up the wrong dialog - unfortunately, it turned out to be a very dire dialog! This has been fixed to put up the correct dialog that says "This file doesn't appear to be HTML - should I open it anyway?", and you can then choose to open it. This fix has been installed in the downloadable version as of 8/30/95.
(Note: in the current beta version, it assumes that this file is HTML, which means that all spacing & linebreaks are compressed. By the 1.0 release version, we'll convert raw text into HTML, preserving all line breaks.)
Workaround: make sure that HTML files created with other programs end in ".htm" or ".html". To import raw text files, open them with another application, and cut & paste that text into PageMill.

Images / ImageMaps

- NCSA-format image maps write out rectangle hot spot shapes incorrectly.
Solution: Bug is fixed - will be in the next available version.
